Abstract:
Estimated relationship between tailings identified along Silver Bow Creek and groundwater elevations. The layer contains zones that range from representing dry tailings that do not reach within two feet of the groundwater to saturated tailings whose depth is more than two feet below the groundwater surface.

The data were created by converting vector layers of tailings depth and groundwater elevation to raster format, subtracting the tailings depth from a digital elevation model of the land surface to create a "tailings bottom elevation" surface, and then finding the difference between the groundwater elevation surface and the tailings bottom elevation surface.

These data were formerly available from the Montana State Library web site but were removed because they are potentially out of date. Please contact the Federal Superfund Bureau of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality if you want these data so they may tell you if newer or better data are available. If the data are not available from the Department of Environmental Quality, you may request a copy from the Montana State Library data archive.

Title: Silver Bow Creek groundwater elevation isolines
Publication place: Bozeman, MT

Process step:
Convert the 2-foot contours and spot elevation data to a 1-meter resolution Digital Elevation Model. This was performed with the Arc/Info Createtin command.
Process date: 12/16/1993
Process step:
Revise tailings depth isolines according to instructions from Canonie. Develop a DEM of tailings depth, assuming a uniform depth between the isolines equal to the mean depth of the bounding isolines.
Process date: 03/30/1994
Process step:
Subract the tailings thickness DEM from the land surface DEM to create a DEM representing the elevation of the bottom of the tailings deposits.
Process date: 03/30/1994
Process step:
Revise the groundwater elevation isolines according to instructions from Canonie. Create a DEM of the groundwater elevation, using arbitrarily input spot elevations to remove flat triangles generated by the Createtin command.
Process date: 03/30/1994
Process step:
Subtract the tailings bottom DEM from the ground water surface DEM to estimate the thickness of tailings saturated with groundwater.
Process date: 03/30/1994
Process step:
Convert the estimated saturated tailings grid to vector format: polygons of 1-foot interval estimated depth of saturation.
